Alternatives to a newborn photo shoot

It’s such a lovely feeling when I get an email from a couple who I documented getting married to tell me that they are expecting a baby. Susan and Sebastian got in touch to book a series of sessions to capture the first couple of years of their life with Sofie. As we had already worked together, I was able to put together a baby photography collection to suit them with a photo album to match.

Instead of a traditional newborn photo shoot within the first two weeks, Susan decided to opt for a little more time getting to know Sofie. We arrange our first session for seven weeks and will be spreading the other three shoots out over the year to capture something in each season. The most important part of the photography was to capture real moments of the family together—also known as lifestyle photography.

SPENDING TIME TOGETHER AS A FAMILY

For all my baby lifestyle photo sessions, I love to shoot natural portraits with the family interacting together. I try to mix in a few classical group shots too as these are always popular with grandparents. We started little Sofie’s shoot as she began to wake up, and this was a perfect moment for capturing family portraits. It was great to catch up with Susan and Sebastian. I love hearing the stories of what new parents discover about their babies, and this relaxed chatter is great for the baby and for candid moments.

We moved around the home to include elements of everyday life, working around Sofie’s needs. She had a cuddle with mum, a little bit of hair combing and a bit of play on her mat. I always ask if there are any special accessories that parents would like to include in their photos. This gorgeous rainbow blanket was knitted by a friend and made for a beautiful backdrop to some portraits in mum’s arms.

For our final pictures, we headed outside and around the corner to capture a few family photos in the vines. We had originally taken engagement photos in a similar location, and I love the feeling of coming full circle. Hopefully by the end of our shoots together we will have one of Sofie walking among the vines, just like mum and dad.

TIMING FOR A BABY LIFESTYLE SESSION

If a newborn photo session is just too much to think about at the end of your pregnancy, a baby lifestyle session can be a great alternative. These photos are much more about everyday life together and less about posed portraits of your baby. They are the type of photograph I love to take because each family is different and yet some things that—especially—dads do, is always the same. The atmosphere is authentic and relaxed. From feeding to bath time and even changing, I’ve captured lots of these moments that when you look back on are guaranteed to make you smile.

For newborn and baby’s first year photography in Switzerland, I offer a wide range of different photography collections. With a choice of albums, canvases, prints, cards downloadable high-resolution files, there is a personal way of you to remember these special moments. If you would like to book a baby photo shoot, please get in touch for COLLECTION PRICING and availability.
