Maternity shoot checklist for mums | My top pregnancy shoot tips

Maternity photo shoots are one of my favourites. I think that women look so naturally beautiful at this special time and it is a privilege for me to capture this extraordinary moment. If you are thinking about adding a maternity session to your baby photography collection, here are my top pregnancy shoot tips.

1. Choosing your maternity photographer

Do some research before you choose a maternity photographer. See what styles are out there and try to imagine yourself in the photos. I always recommend that mums pick a photographer who suits their own style. My maternity photos are natural, candid and understatedly beautiful. I shoot outdoors or at your home. I am not a studio photographer because I don’t like static or over-dramatic images. What is most important for my style is that the images reflect a joie de vivre and your individuality. I think being in a comfortable, beloved place is the best way to achieve this genuineness.

2. When to book your maternity shoot

If you think you would like to book a maternity shoot, be sure to book early. Around your 20-week scan is a good marker. I recommend scheduling the shoot between 28 and 34 weeks (a little earlier for twins). This is when your bump will be at its most shapely and you will be feeling great. The earlier you book, the more flexibility and advice I can offer if complications arise.

3. What to wear to your maternity shoot

It is essential to wear something that makes you feel comfortable, confident and beautiful. If you are happy changing on the fly, then choose something tight fitting and something loose and flowing if that suits your style. Otherwise, I usually recommend close clothing that shows off your bump. Accessorise with favourite or special items and feel free to bring anything you have bought for the baby already. It can be a lovely continuity to have the same teddy or outfit in your maternity and newborn shoots.

4. Treat yourself

Have a manicure, a blowout and really treat your body. Not only will this help you look your best, it will make you feel great and that always comes through in the photos. Think about moisturising well for the months leading up to the shoot, especially as the air gets dryer in autumn and winter.

5. Bring the family

It can be great to include younger siblings in your photos. If they are young or likely to get bored quickly, bring along a friend who can help entertain while we do couple shots. This will also take some of the stress off of you and let you focus on your photos. Kids won’t always do what we want them to. Be sure to listen to your photographer, they’ve done this before and I always have lots of ways to trick them into just the pose we were looking for.

6. Talk to your photographer

Whoever you choose to take your maternity photos, take the time to let them know what you are looking for. This could be anything from mentioning a few photos or shoots from their website that you love, to a pinterest board of your favourite images and poses. When it comes to the shoot they will be able to combine a mixture of the things you like from other photos with something that is unique to you. This is where choosing the right person is so important. If you trust your photographer, they will be able to direct you into the most wonderful maternity photos. This should be a fun and stress-free experience, a moment before your family changes forever.
