Want to make the most of the beautiful winter weather? Perhaps you’ve booked a last minute family skiing trip. Whatever your reasons for getting outside this February, here are my top five tips getting the best snow pics for your winter family photos.

Get everyone involved

A family photoshoot always runs more smoothly when everyone involved is excited about the possibilities. Get your brood engaged by chatting together about what they would like to do. Ask kids what pictures they want of themselves and their siblings. They will amaze you with their fun and zany ideas, and at the end of the shoot you will have something truly unique to you and your family.

Plan a whole day

If you are making the journey to the mountains, plan a whole day where the photoshoot is just one part. Liaise with me for the best time for winter family photos and then add in some skiing, a hike through the woods, sledging, snowball fights or a snowman making competition. All of these things make for epic family photos too.

Dress warm and waterproof

The snow is only fun when you are warm and dry. If you are planning something active and might get wet, bring a change of clothes. Always bring a few extra layers, they can always be removed for the pictures. Personally, I prefer winter pics where my clients look like they belong in the snow and are happy, not cold. If that means snow boots and thermals under your dress, then own it!

Snow not scenery

The weather can be unpredictable. If you are coming up to Villars-sur-Ollon, Gryon or Solalex in Switzerland then you might get tremendous views, or it might be cloudy. Choose your shoot location because of the snow and we will get amazing photos whatever the weather. Some of my favourite shoots have been on overcast day where the light is just beautiful. By deciding to come to my local area you also have eyes on the ground to tell you exactly what the weather is like and we can adapt our plan accordingly.

Book early

The February holidays book up fast, as do the weekends. Don’t be disappointed. Get in touch as soon as you think you would like a family photoshoot and we can get some beautiful winter photos together.
