Christmas in the Alps

A very Happy Christmas from the Alps

One of the things I love about living in Switzerland is the really clearly defined seasons. My favourites are spring and autumn, the change in the landscape and the trees every day fills me with joy. As November draws to a close and the snow starts to arrive I feel an excitement about the winter. There are those little things that make my heart sing: the crunch of stepping on fresh snow; watching the drifts gather slowly on tree branches as the flakes fall silently; dashing through the forest as the sun comes out and mini avalanches throw down glitter.

The mountains are incredible in the winter and there is so much more to the Alps than skiing. A special way to enjoy the best of the mountains is to opt for something slower and more reflective, like snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. Both are very simple to learn the basics and cross-country has the benefit of a little adrenaline boost.

Some of the most beautiful memories I have of the winter are from unexpected moments. After a, slightly harrowing tree-filled, section of off-piste we hit a path through fresh snow where the flakes were falling in a soft breeze and the whole scene sparkled and danced. It’s not something that can be captured on camera, but I loved the slow push out because I got to revel in something from a dream. This winter I’m going to try to make the most of free bluebird days to get out in nature and find some perfect moments.

I’m not really one for ‘organised fun’ – apparently I don’t like to be told what to do! – but there is something about the end of the year that seems right for reflection. So what are the ways you are going to make the most of your home environment this winter? Or perhaps you’re planning a trip to the mountains, why not try to see it from somewhere other than the ski slope.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
